The “Toy Story” movies have taught us to empathize with inanimate, mass produced playthings, to imagine them with inner lives in some ways richer than our own. “Wreck-It Ralph” attempts a similar feat with the pixilated avatars that shoot, scamper and zoom across our various interactive screens. In some ways this represents an easier cognitive leap, since those characters already possess rudimentary personalities along with the ability to move and make sounds. But video game characters are also the coldblooded (or maybe code blooded) inhabitants of rigidly deterministic worlds. They may command our sometimes compulsive attention, but can we ever really love them? 

The makers of “Wreck-It Ralph” Rich Moore directed, from a screenplay by Phil Johnston and Jennifer Lee answer this question by appealing, first of all, to nostalgia, to the affection parents feel for games that evoke their childhoods. Woody and Buzz Lightyear were to some degree baby boomer throwbacks, and Ralph and some of his companions similarly recall the golden age of Generation X arcade play, the 1980s of Pac Man and Centipede and Donkey Kong.

Hulking, blue-furred behemoth James P. "Sully" Sullivan (John Goodman) and his one-eyed assistant Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) are employed by Monsters, Inc., a scream processing factory. It seems that the denizens of their realm thrive on the screams of kids spooked by monsters lurking under their beds and in their closets. It's the job of Sully, Mike, and their co-workers, including sarcastic Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi), crab-like CEO Henry J. Waternoose (James Coburn), and lovely snake-headed receptionist Celia (Jennifer Tilly) to keep the frights flowing. When Sully and Mike are followed back into the monster world by a very unafraid little human girl named Boo (Mary Gibbs), they are exiled to her universe, where they discover that such a modern-day mythological specimen as the Abominable Snowman is a fellow refugee.

When I was 5, I got a tough dose of reality from my friend Mark. “There’s no such thing as Santa Claus,” he told me. “Santa Claus is really your mother.” Learning this was no great tragedy, though it did take me awhile to figure out exactly what he meant. It is every child’s prerogative to believe in nonsense, and every child’s fate to lose at least a portion of that belief.

The real puzzle is why adults should be so invested in encouraging and protecting the superstitions of children. The young are naturally credulous, imaginative creatures, and the rest of us sentimentalize these cognitive facts by associating them with innocence and wonder. 

The new movie “Rise of the Guardians,” for example, works so hard at celebrating wide eyes and naïve joy that it comes close to spoiling its own intermittent wonderfulness. Directed by Peter Ramsey and written by David Lindsay-Abaire (and based on a story by William Joyce), “Rise of the Guardians,” like so much animated entertainment these days, is by turns silly, maudlin and noisy, with just enough ingenuity to make you wish it were better.
